Camosun’s Audiences

On an average day, I don’t
read the newspaper, listen to the radio or watch TV. Like me, many students get
their news online through social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and
Facebook. Despite this, I think public relations are extremely important to
Camosun College both in traditional formats and online. This is because of the
variety of stakeholders that Camosun College communicates with.
It is important to consider
the audience and demographic when conducting public relations activities. Stakeholders
such as parents of students, employers and teachers may be more likely to watch
the cable TV, have a newspaper subscription or listen to the radio on their way
to work. Therefore, traditional mediums are useful for reaching specific
demographics that Camosun wants to advertise to or inform. Understanding their
core demographics and the platforms they use allows PR specialists to target
relevant information to that audience. For example, since many students use
social media, Camosun can alter their messaging and content for that audience. Camosun’s
website is useful for conducting general public relations because it reaches a
wide audience with a range of interests and reasons for visiting the site.
Camosun’s public relations
activities need to be conducted on a variety of platforms to reach the wide
range of audiences it serves. Therefore, traditional mediums such as TV, radio
and newspaper are vital for communicating relevant information to specific core
stakeholders.
